Radio-Television News Directors

The 22nd Annual Northern California RTNDA (Radio-Television News Directors Association) News Awards were presented Saturday
evening, October 18th at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco. KGO ABC 7 South Bay Bureau Chief and Reporter Rigo
Chacon was the master of ceremony, with NorCal RTNDA president Greg Tantum, News Director, KGO NewsTalk 810 handing out
the plaques. Greg introduced the Board of Directors.
KGO NewsTalk 810 was the big winner with 8 awards, KCBS All News 74 was second with 7 awards and KPIX CBS 5, third with 6
awards. Best newscast plaques for Class “AA” went to KTVU FOX 2’s “The Ten O’Clock News” for 60 minutes and to KTVU FOX
2's “KTVU News at Noon” for 30 minutes; Class “A” to KEYT, Santa Barbara “Ken News at 6” for 30 minutes. Radio Class
“AA” to KGO-AM “KGO Radio Afternoon News” over 15 minutes.
The Awards Banquet was the highlight of the three-day conference, which included sessions on: “A Foot in the Door” with
Don Fitzpatrick, “Student Tape Critiques,” “Covering Politics from the Recall to the White House,” “Investigative Reporting,”
“It’s a Tough Call,” “Meet the General Managers,” “Talent Coaching,” “Anchors Away,” and “Visual Story Telling.” ABC News
Correspondent, Mike Cerre gave the luncheon address discussing his time as an embedded reporter in the Iraq war.
Other events included exhibitors of newsroom products, station recruiters and one-on-one tape critiques for news reporters
and anchors. Social events included a motorized cable car tour of the city and Sunday Brunch on the California Hornblower.

Awards were presented to newsrooms in Northern California and Reno, in two divisions, “AA” Markets 1 to 30 and “A” Markets
31 and higher. The entry period was from January 1, 2002 until June 30, 2003. The entries were judges by news managers from
around the country. Over 195 entries were received from 23 stations.
